A Not-So-Mellow Yellow

What I’m Listening to: Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones

Happy Mother’s Day! Although I swear it was January five minutes ago, apparently it’s now almost summer. Not that you’ll hear me complaining; summer is one of my favorite seasons. The main reason? Summer fashion of course! Like this dress, which is one of my new favorite pieces. (Do you hear that? I made this sound like a normal fashion blog for three entire sentences (truly a new record).) And yes, the dress really is as bright as it looks, I love it. (P.S. the pockets are real) Peace + pockets,

Easter 2017

What I’m Listening to: Down by Marian Hill

Happy Easter! The mini-sister had a good time, though apparently I’m not allowed to buy candy for her Easter egg hunt unsupervised again (157 eggs is apparently overkill for one child). What’s not overkill however is the gourgeous pattern of this dress, I love when contrary seeming colors mesh so well. The brooches add just the right amount of sparkle for a holiday dress.

In the spirit of Easter, we must be reminded of the words of Mark 16:5-7:

As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’”

        – Mark 16:5-7 NIV

It can be easy not to notice all of the prophecies that Jesus foretold and then fulfilled simply within the Gospels. Of course the most important is that He would die, and then on the third day, rise again. There is no miracle greater than that. If He can keep that promise to us, He can keep all of His promises; to take care of us and guide us, just as He told us He would. Rejoice, He is risen, He is our faithful Shepard, and we are forgiven!

Peace and chocolate eggs,

A Capital Brunch

What I’m Listening To: Just Let Me Cry by Lesley Gore

I know what you’re thinking, so yes, the title is a pun. I went to the Capital Hotel here in the state capital to have brunch (I’ll give you a minute to allow my mastery of both the English language and puns sink in). It was amazing, I got the biscuits and gravy which were delicious. (And aren’t those tiny jam jars the cutest?) Anyway, it’s also abruptly turned rather summer-ish, so time to stop pretending the 50 degree lows were cold enough to warrant a wool coat I suppose. Instead, I’m breaking out the sandals, jean shorts and summer tops early this year because I enjoy tempting the weather to smite me for my hubris. (It’s supposed to be back in the 50s by Wednesday.) C’est la guerre!

Peace,

Bows, Flounces, and Ruffles! Oh My!

What I’m Listening to: Naive by The Kooks

Happy Valentine’s Day! Someone once told me you shouldn’t wear themed clothing for holidays, but as anyone who’s read my blog before knows, I clearly didn’t listen to them. It’s Valentine’s Day, so I’m wearing pink, red, bows, ruffles, sequins, and flounces, all in one fluffy frock (this dress legit has it all). Of course, I can’t totally abandon my grunge roots, so I accessorized with my Dr. Marten’s Mary Janes.

Peace (and PSAs against those candy hearts),

Bookshelves & Patriots

What I’m listening to: Where Did Our Love Go by The Supremes

Well, the game is over and wow. When I started drafting this post in the middle of the second quarter it read very differently. Now I can say it was a game to remember; especially since it set several records for not only the Pats, but also for the League. Amazing game aside, the first half had me picking out a bookshelf for my bedroom instead of having to focus on that pre-halftime score. For months I’ve been swearing I’m going to buy a bookshelf so I can move my books out of stacks on my floor (I know, I know, so 2005) but I just haven’t gotten around to it. I pretty much knew what I wanted so my requirements were pretty straightforward.

1. Large enough to hold all my books but narrow enough to fit between the side of my bed and the wall.

2. Have adjustable shelves so I can fit everything from paperbacks to vinyl records.

3. Be (reasonably) inexpensive.

With these three criteria in mind I started searching online. Wayfair (HGTVs favorite brand) had some bookshelves, but most (save one) were either too small or impractical/unattractive. Same deal on Amazon. Thwarted thus far I turned to Ikea and after navigating the world’s largest website menu I finally managed to find what I was looking for. I narrowed it down to three (plus the aforementioned Wayfair shelf).Once I got it down to the semi-finals it was time for my decision maker: which one would fulfill my number one requirement? As it turns out, the black bookcase is higher than my ceiling, so that was out. The low cream-colored one was an awkward height and the more I thought about it the more I realized I don’t actually want a blue bookshelf. As such,  I now have flat-pack furniture being delivered to my house so that I may embark on an even more harrowing adventure: putting it together. Join me next time for more sketchy sports commentary (this is 100% an empty threat) and me putting a bookshelf together backwards (definitely a real threat).

Peace,

KJ

Mini-Post: A Study in Blue

What I’m Listening To: Read My Mind by The Killers

Welcome to Mini-Post Monday, where I feature a quick rundown of an outfit plus a great quote from a book I’m currently loving. This week I’m sharing a quote from Time Regained, the final volume of Marcel Proust’s seven volume saga Remembrance of Things Past. I’m also loving flowy 1970’s inspired dresses right now, they’re just the right blend of style and comfort. This one has a such a fun print! “Every reader, as he reads, is actually the reader of himself. The writer’s work is only a kind of optical instrument he provides the reader so he can discern what he might never have seen in himself without this book. The reader’s recognition in himself of what the book says is the proof of the book’s truth.”

5 Things Every Girl Needs For the Christmas Season

What I’m Listening to: Wait for Me by Kings of Leon

Less than a month ’til Christmas Day! With that in mind, you know there’s never a better time to make a list (and yes, maybe check it twice) to make sure you’re ready to have a terrific Christmas this year.

5. A Great Playlist

I don’t just mean Christmas music, (though that’s basically a given). I’m talking about the kind of music you love to get ready to, the kind of music you like to wrap presents and bake Christmas cookies to. A versatile, fun, up-beat playlist that always makes you feel pretty, chic, and maybe even a little bit dangerous.

4. A Killer Dress

Christmas is a time for parties, and whether you are the world’s biggest introvert or the social butterfly to end them all, you should have at least one dress that makes you look fantastic. Every girl has a few styles and colors that suit them best, but don’t be afraid to try something new.

3. A Checklist

I know, I know, nobody likes a checklist. But as one of the few who do, you know it’s my duty to let you know how simple they’ll make your life. (I definitely don’t have an endless supply of color-coded lists that span across multiple devices and notebooks.)

2. A Pretty Lipstick

It doesn’t have to break the bank, though if you are looking to splurge you know I’m going to suggest YSL’s Rouge Volupté Shine. Their colors are perfect for whatever you’re looking for, from darker shades to a super pale pink. For those looking for a less expensive alternative I think that L’Oreal Colour Riche lipsticks are smooth, color-rich options that won’t put a dent in your Christmas shopping budget.

1.  The Christmas Spirit

I bet you guys knew I was gonna get sentimental, but it’s true and you know it. After all, the most important element of Christmas, is Christmas. The excitement, the joy of Kroger selling Sweet Tart candy canes, and of course the sense of a new beginning that’s so integral to the Christian celebration of Christmas.

Peace (on Earth),

Reality Boots

What I’m Listening To: Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand

I know, I know, it’s a terrible pun based off the title of a movie that came out before I was born (it was called Reality Bites for the whippersnappers in the audience). But let’s be real, if you’re not at least 35% here for the puns you’re in the wrong place my humor adverse friend. Anyways, it’s finally starting to cool down here in Arkansas, (meaning it’s dropped below 87 degrees) so it’s time to break out the fall stuff. What constitutes fall stuff you may ask? Boldly printed long dresses and blue suede booties in this case. Check it!

Happy Birthday + Laura Ashley

What I’m listening to: Someone That Loves You by HONNE

Happy birthday to me! I spent a better portion of yesterday making this Momofuku Milk Bar style cake. And seriously, let me tell you, when they say it’s an amazing cake recipe, they mean it. It’s like what you always dreamed a box cake would taste like. Recipe link here btw. (You can thank me later)

I got some amazing things this year, but one of my definite favorites was this vintage Laura Ashley dress.

A flouncy sundress made practical by my favorite shoes of the summer; Addidas Superstars, is perfect for long, end-of-summer days. (Also for opening presents!)

Cheers to the new year!

Blueberry Picking + Cobbler

What I’m listening to: He’s a Rebel by The Crystals

It’s June. That means the beginning of summer, avoiding your third cousin’s wedding invite, and of course, blueberry season. I’ve gone u-picking for years, but for the non-hippie children in the back I’ll elaborate. Basically it means you drive out to a farm and spend a couple hours battling bugs, heat and the odd small animal for the right to search for blueberries you could buy at Kroger. Except that u-pick blueberries will be the most amazing blueberries you’ve ever had. The endless piles of berries that you heaped in your plastic bucket will be gone within a matter of days (they make the most amazing desserts). So anyways, here is my absolutely factual recipe for blueberry cobbler, from farm to table. (And yes, you are allowed to punch me for saying something so pretentious.)

First step is to find your local u-pick place. They’ll give you a bucket, and off you go. If the blueberries are ripe they’ll be indigo and almost fall off the branch.

(If they look like the berries shown above, move along, they’re not ready.)

Now that you’ve picked all those blueberries, take a well deserved break. After all, you just did hard labor your great-grandparents would have considered a vacation. Now you’re ready to go home and make your cobbler. Here’s what you’ll need:

1 casserole dish

1/2 cup butter

1 cup self-rising flour

1 cup white sugar

1 cup milk

3 cups blueberries

First, melt the butter and pour it into the casserole dish.

Next, mix the flour, sugar and milk together in a separate bowl.

Once it looks like the above picture, pour it directly onto the butter. DO NOT MIX!

It should now look like this. Pat yourself on the back, you’re almost done. Now dump the blueberries on top of everything. (Yes, on top. And don’t even think about mixing it.)

Throw it (not literally) into the oven at 350 for an hour.

All done! Top with ice cream (I know, I know, I’m betraying my Georgia roots but ice cream beats whipped cream any day of the week in my book.)

And enjoy! Seriously though, just to give you an idea of how many blueberries were picked here’s a bonus picture.

 I’m gonna go eat cobbler.

Peace
